Celsius values are rounded to the nearest 10°, the way recipes write them.

Fan ovens

Fan (convection) ovens circulate hot air, so food cooks faster. As a rule, set a fan oven about 20°C (25°F) lower than the temperature in a recipe written for a conventional oven, or keep the temperature and check the food earlier. Many UK recipes give both: "180°C, 160°C fan, gas 4".

The formulas

  • Celsius to Fahrenheit: multiply by 9, divide by 5, add 32. 180°C × 9 ÷ 5 + 32 = 356°F, which recipes round to 350°F.
  • Fahrenheit to Celsius: subtract 32, multiply by 5, divide by 9. 400°F − 32 = 368 × 5 ÷ 9 = 204°C, rounded to 200°C.

Recipes round to the nearest 25°F or 10°C because home ovens are rarely more accurate than that. An inexpensive oven thermometer is the best way to know your oven's real temperature.

Questions

What is 180°C in Fahrenheit?

180°C is 356°F, which recipes round to 350°F. It's gas mark 4, or 160°C in a fan oven.

What is 350°F in Celsius?

350°F is about 177°C, written as 180°C in recipes (160°C fan, gas mark 4).

What is 200°C fan in a normal oven?

About 220°C in a conventional oven (425°F, gas mark 7).
